Gonzo In Lineup Tonight

Posted by Mark McCray |

George A. King/New York Post reports:

Alberto Gonzalez, not Wilson Betemit, will play shortstop until Derek Jeter returns.

Gonzalez, an above-average minor league defender who didn't look sure of himself in a 12-game big-league gig last September, joined the Yankees today from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (Triple-A) and is expected to be in the starting lineup tonight against Royals right-hander Zach Greinke at Kauffman Stadium.

Cashman said Gonzalez is coming to play, so that means he will be at shortstop until Jeter is ready. Jeter, who felt something in his left quad muscle Sunday and left Monday's game after two innings, is out at least until Friday night, when the Yankees open a three-game series against the Red Sox in Fenway Park.

There is no guarantee Jeter will be ready by Friday.

The Yankees toyed with moving Alex Rodriguez from third base to his old position of shortstop but opted to go with Gonzalez.

Gonzalez, a slow starter at the plate throughout his minor-league career, was hitting .154 (2-for-13) for SWB.

Brian Cashman wasn't ready to divulge who was out to make room for Gonzalez, 25, but did say the Yankees were staying with 12 pitchers so that means it's either Betemit, Duncan, or Ensberg.
